Safety of women has always been an issue of concern within many States in our country. Now this thing was established on Saturday night in Bengaluru. Thousands of people had gathered on MG Road & Brigade Road, in the center of the city on NewYear’s Eve. Despite tight security arrangements, women were molested on the street before the public in huge and their male associates could not do anything about it. 1500 policemen were deployed on precautionary measure to ensure secure celebration by thousand of people on bikes, cars & on foot.
It is shameful to say a group of men disguised themselves as revellers then molested & passed lewd remarks to women on streets to the extent that they had to take off shoes to run for help. Most shockingly, Many have eye-witnessed to this mass molestation of women. In the opinion of a Former city Police Commissioner, the entire city police force and men from reserve battalions, should have been deployed on the streets to maintain law & order. It seems that all arrangements made had gone into vain as the police department had underestimated the situation had actually occurred. Being less in number, the cops were helpless and intervened depending on the gravity of the situation.
An eye-witness who is a working professional said: “I personally went and asked one of the cops deployed on the streets to go to the aid of two women being accosted by a group of youth on MG Road. He went and chased them but they were back to the spot in a couple of minutes. There was nothing much that they could do as the group was back and the women were also in the same crowd,” As per city police, they have not registered a single case of sexual harassment or molestation. Identical statement spoke by Nagendra Kumar, deputy commissioner of police, Command Centre, Bengaluru, that not any distress call were received at the city control room. On the other side, a different story was narrated by a woman police officer deployed on church street.
She said she had to chase away few men trying to harass a heavily drunk woman. More so, The decision to broaden the deadlines for New Year Celebrations till 2 am was a major cause of concern for the cops on duty, the sources revealed. Also in the perception of a senior police official, the deadline extension was done due to the pressure from some of the commercial establishment.
